Health Surveillance

Health surveillance is a system of ongoing health checks that detect any harmful changes to someone's health. The checks are proactive and look for indicators of physical and mental stress, including anxiety, depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. These tests can sometimes be required by law, particularly if you work in an industry with solvents, fumes, dust, or biological agents.

Health surveillance is important for detecting the early signs of illness, providing data to help with the evaluation of health risks, and highlighting any lapses within the current system that need to be worked on.

Health surveillance aims to provide advice to managers on employees fit for work status. Upon the completion of Health Surveillance, the employer will receive a non-confidential health record for each individual, advising them on whether the employee is either “fit”, “fit with restrictions” or “unfit to work”.

Using group statistics, where appropriate, collated from the health surveillance outcomes, we can assess if the control measures that are currently in place are substantial/can enable you to shape workplace health initiatives.

Our Health Surveillance services are always tailored to your needs and delivered either from our clinics (which can be more cost effective), or direct at your sites, causing minimal disruption to your business.

The areas that we cover include:

  • Respiratory Hazards
  • Exposure to Noise
  • Skin Sensitisors
  • HAVS
  • Vision
  • Isocyanate
  • Musculoskeletal
  • Urinalysis
  • Height, Weight, BMI
  • Blood Pressure
  • Safety Critical
  • Drug and Alcohol

A risk assessment should always be used to determine whether health surveillance needs to take place.

Risk Assessment

A Risk Assessment is used as the first stage of our Health Surveillance service. It's used to identify and assess the hazards and risks associated within the work place. Health surveillance should not be used as a substitute for undertaking a risk assessment.

Risk assessment includes 5 steps:

  • Identify the hazards
  • Decide who could be harmed and how
  • Evaluate the risks and possible precautions
  • Record and analyse your findings
  • Reviewing your assessment

Management Referrals

Sickness absence can cause major disruptions for employers, leaving them short-staffed, increasing costs and reducing productivity. Research indicates the longer an individual is off sick from work, the harder it becomes to return them to the workplace.

Short and long-term absence needs to be managed on a proactive basis to minimise absence and ensure team leaders in the organisation understand and can plan for how long individuals are absent.

A doctor's sick note generally can only provide an individual and employer with advice only, while a fit for work assessment, signed off by a qualified occupation health practitioner, supersedes a GP's note.

Management referrals are generally conducted over the phone, since the employee is absent from work. They will typically take 60 minutes (45 minutes consultation, 15 minutes to write) and can only be conducted by a qualified OH advisor or above. Face-to-face management referrals can also be requested for an on-site meeting. The timing and qualification required remains the same for this.

The qualified OH advisor will recommend to the company whether the individual is fit for work, or when they may be fit in the future. They can also advise on further monitoring or communication with the individual to ensure their recovery stays on track.

01.

On-site health surveillance to achieve baseline results

02.

Remote paper-based screening with a phone consultation if required

Pre-Employment Checks

Pre-employment checks look to verify whether or not the person applying for a position is fit for the role in question. They're cost-effective because it will prevent potential health issues with employees further down the line. A pre-employment check requires two forms of consultations, depending on the job role:

Drug Screening

We believe that early, accurate diagnosis is better than waiting for problems to arise, whether you are drug screening or monitoring health. Effective diagnosis can greatly benefit people’s health, catch issues early, stop accidents from happening and improve performance and productivity.

Hair Analysis Laboratory Screening

Comprehensive laboratory screening for a wide spectrum of drugs and alcohol, using a hair sample to investigate history of substance abuse.

Raw Drug & Substance Analysis

Analytical and forensic methods are utilised to investigate powders, liquids and solids for illicit drugs or other substances.
